“Up ahead is Sky's the Limit Observatory and Nature Center, just outside the North Entrance. For a daytime stop, I'd start with the outdoor model of the Solar System, called the Orrery.”

Sky’s the Limit is a volunteer-run observatory and nature center just outside Joshua Tree’s North Entrance in Twentynine Palms. The daytime grounds make a worthwhile short stop for the walk-through Orrery and nature trail; plan around a scheduled program if you want telescope time. A campus visit doesn’t guarantee the dome or indoor spaces will be open.

Walk through the Solar SystemThe outdoor Orrery models the Solar System at a scale of 1 to 20 billion.

The outdoor Orrery models the Solar System at a scale of 1 to 20 billion. The planets sit along their orbits, so walking between them makes the immense distances part of the exhibit. When docents are on site, Saturday mornings usually bring an Orrery tour and a look through a solar scope; check ahead because that depends on the volunteer schedule.

Telescope nightsPublic night programs pair astronomy talks with views through volunteer astronomers’ telescopes.

Public night programs pair astronomy talks with views through volunteer astronomers’ telescopes. What you see depends on conditions and which volunteers bring equipment. Popular events can fill, so reserve ahead when the program offers booking. Use red light only; white lights and flash photography aren’t allowed during night programs.

Nature alongside the starsThe campus also has an outdoor nature trail and meditation garden.

The campus also has an outdoor nature trail and meditation garden. It serves as a satellite campus for Copper Mountain College’s astronomy program, connecting local students and professors with the high-desert sky.
