About Brooks Camp Visitor Center

Sitting on the shore of Naknek Lake, Brooks Camp Visitor Center is your first stop at Brooks Camp—and for good reason. Rangers run a required bear-orientation that teaches you how to move around safely in one of the highest-density brown bear areas on Earth. It’s equal parts practical and confidence-boosting, and it sets the tone for everything you’ll do here.

Tips for visiting Brooks Camp Visitor Center

Plan time for the mandatory bear orientation as soon as you arrive.

The visitor center typically operates June 1–September 17, with limited services possibly through September 30. July brings big salmon runs and big crowds; September often balances excellent bear viewing with fewer people. For the platforms and the light, early morning or late evening are clutch. Weather and floatplane schedules can shuffle your timing, so keep plans flexible.

Permits You Might Need

If your plans include the Brooks River Corridor between June 15 and October 31, you’ll need a 7‑day permit (max group size six). Sort that before you start your river time so you’re not backtracking.

Don’t miss the short films (including The Ends of the Earth) for a fast primer on Katmai’s wildlife and volcanic story. The center also lends bear-resistant canisters.

Right next door are handy essentials: pit toilets, a food and gear cache, and a picnic area enclosed by a bear‑resistant electric fence. Since you can’t carry food around Brooks Camp, this fenced picnic spot is where you’ll actually eat.
