About Brooks River Historic Ranger Station

This humble log cabin is where the modern National Park Service story at Brooks River begins. Built in 1955 from locally felled logs, it was the first NPS structure in Katmai and is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It’s a small, no-frills spot—but for history-minded visitors, it marks the moment Katmai shifted from far‑flung monument to a place with on‑the‑ground rangers and services.

Plan a look during the summer operating window (roughly June 1–September 17), when ranger programs are running and Brooks Camp is lively. If your main goal is bears, July and September are typically the most dynamic months; August can be noticeably quieter. A quick swing by this cabin fits well while you’re moving between the Visitor Center and the trails or platforms.
