About Lower River Platform

The Lower River Platform is the closest of Brooks Camp’s bear-viewing platforms, set where the Brooks River meets Naknek Lake. It’s a convenient, lower-angle vantage for watching brown bears travel between the lake and river, and it can feel more intimate than the famous falls when bears are working the river mouth or shoreline.

Tips for visiting Lower River Platform

Use restrooms and fill water at Brooks Camp before walking to the platform.
Pack waterproof layers and insect protection; weather turns quickly.
Bring a telephoto lens and binoculars; overcast light is excellent for fur detail.
If the Falls platform is at capacity, wait it out here for great viewing.

Best time to visit

Daylight: Early and late light reduces glare on the water and renders dark bear fur beautifully.
Season: Mid-summer often concentrates bears at Brooks Falls; the lower river shines outside that peak, especially early and late season when fish and bears use the river mouth and lake shorelines.
Crowds: Midday in July is busiest at the Falls with waitlists and time limits; mornings and evenings tend to be calmer. June commonly sees lighter crowds overall.

Logistics

Getting here means flying to King Salmon, then continuing by boat or floatplane to Brooks Camp. From camp, it’s a short walk on maintained paths and boardwalks to the platform. Rangers manage access and may temporarily close walkways when bears need space—plan to be flexible.

For photos, bring binoculars and a telephoto lens (300–600mm equivalent) with rain covers; overcast days are your friend.
There are no facilities at the platform—use restrooms and fill water in the Brooks Camp developed area before you head out.
Follow ranger direction and give bears the right of way; food rules are strict and enforced after mandatory bear safety orientation.
If the Falls platform is full, start here—you may get excellent action without the wait.
