Overview
Tumbling Creek is a stout approach into the Rockwall corridor, climbing along a thundering creek to the Tumbling Creek backcountry campground. It’s rated Difficult and feels every bit of it, especially with an overnight pack. Expect a classic Kootenay mix of forest walking, rushing water, and big‑country vibes without committing to the full Rockwall traverse.
Route
From the Highway 93 corridor, the trail passes the Paint Pots after roughly 1 km, follows the Helmet Trail, then branches onto the Tumbling Creek Trail to the campground. Plan for about 20.1 km (12.5 miles) total as an out‑and‑back to the campground, with significant elevation gain and steady climbing. Hikers often use this as a challenging day out or a straightforward overnight before linking deeper Rockwall objectives toward Helmet/Ochre Junction and Helmet Falls.
Best Times to Hike
The main season runs June through October. Snow lingers at higher elevations until late June; July and August bring the best trail footing but also the most people. September is typically drier and cooler with an increasing chance of snowfall. Outside the main season, travel is not maintained or patrolled and risks increase quickly.
Permits and Regulations
Overnight trips require a backcountry permit and camping is only in designated backcountry campgrounds. Use wildlife‑proof lockers/poles for all food and scented items, and pack out all trash. Campfires are not permitted in the backcountry. Pets are allowed but must stay leashed; consider leaving dogs at home for overnight trips. Typical campsite rules apply: one tent and up to four people per tent pad, maximum three consecutive nights per campground, and a maximum reservation group of ten.

Mountain weather changes fast—carry full rain layers and warm insulation year‑round. Avalanches are possible from early winter into early summer, especially near and above treeline. Tips
Treat all surface water. Pack a solid navigation kit (topographic map plus GPS/compass) and a first‑aid/blister kit. Trekking poles help on the steep, sustained grades. Start early, keep breaks short, and use the Tumbling Creek campground as a natural turnaround or overnighter if you want a big day without committing to the full Rockwall.
