Overview

About Ennerdale Water

Why stop

  • Road-free setting feels genuinely remote
  • Strong lake-and-fell views with a rewarding circular walk

Heads up

  • Southern shore is rough and scrambly in places
  • Swimming is prohibited and the valley has few visitor facilities
Ennerdale Water is the most westerly lake in the Lake District and the only one without a road beside it. That small distinction changes the experience: you see the lake from paths, woodland, and open fell rather than from a continuous lakeside drive. Pillar, Steeple, and Haycock form a rugged skyline at the eastern end, while the Wild Ennerdale project has kept the valley feeling unusually untamed.

Plan your stop

Before you go

Best time to go

Go early or later in the day, especially on a bright weekend, for quieter paths and calmer reflections. Dry weather makes the southern shore much more comfortable, but the western fells can hold cloud and rain even when the valley looks settled. Bring waterproof layers, sturdy footwear, a map, food, and water. There are no facilities on the lakeside routes; the nearest toilets and café are in Ennerdale Bridge, and there is no direct public transport to the lake itself.

More about Ennerdale Water

Walking the shoreBleach Green is the best starting point for a first visit.

Bleach Green is the best starting point for a first visit. It sits at the western end of the lake, with a level approach to the shore and a short surfaced route for an easy taste of the scenery. The full circuit is about 11.5 km and usually takes around four hours. The northern side follows a quieter gravel track, but the southern shore is narrower, rockier, and includes a few short scrambly sections around Angler's Crag. Wear shoes with good grip and allow more time than the low elevation suggests.

Bowness Knott, farther along the northern shore, is another useful starting point for the circuit, forest roads, and longer fell walks. Both car parks are at the western end of the valley. Bleach Green is free; Bowness Knott is pay-and-display. There is no public road alongside the lake, and vehicles cannot continue beyond Bowness Knott unless they have an authorized reason to be in the valley.

What to look forThe water, regenerating woodland, and open fell make this a good place to slow down and watch.

The water, regenerating woodland, and open fell make this a good place to slow down and watch. Yellowhammers can be seen around the gorse in spring and summer. Galloway cattle and a small herd of pigs roam parts of the valley, so keep dogs close, do not feed the animals, and give them room. The lake is managed as a reservoir and swimming is not allowed.
