Buttermere: Lakeshore and Village

Overview

About Buttermere Village

Why stop

  • A compact base for the classic low-level lakeshore walk
  • Big fell scenery starts right outside the hamlet

Heads up

  • Popular clear-weather days bring crowds to a very small hamlet
Buttermere Village is the small, human-scale arrival point for the Buttermere valley. A few farms, two inns, a café, and St James' Church sit between the lakes and the fells, making this a useful place to get your bearings before walking. The village is modest; the reward is how quickly it opens into a huge landscape of water, pasture, woodland, and dark mountain slopes.

More about Buttermere Village

What to expectThe village is a practical starting point for the classic Buttermere lakeshore circuit, about 4.

The village is a practical starting point for the classic Buttermere lakeshore circuit, about 4.5 miles (7km) and roughly three hours if you stop for the views. The route is mostly easy and level, with a short road section and one rocky step where you may need your hands. Walking anticlockwise gives families a more sheltered opening through the woods and leaves a small tunnel for the return.

This is a popular walking base, so clear weekends can feel busy in a very small hamlet. The valley is exposed to rain, wind, and fast-moving cloud even when the village feels mild. Bring a waterproof layer and grippy shoes; the lakeshore rocks and the steeper paths toward the fells become slippery when wet.

The village has food, lodging, a café shop with basic walking supplies, public toilets, and several parking areas. A customer-access EV charging point is mapped at the Bridge Hotel. There is no need to make the hamlet your whole day, but it is an excellent launch point for a low-level walk and a sensible place to pause after one.

For quieter lanes and softer light on the surrounding fells, arrive early or stay into late afternoon. Midday is livelier and often less flattering for photographs, while low cloud can hide the higher skyline and make the valley feel more enclosed. Spring brings a durable seasonal restriction on part of the northern lakeshore path, protecting nesting sandpipers; follow the signed alternative if that section is closed.

Give yourself more time than a quick photo stop if you want the village, church, and lakeshore to feel connected. On a wet or cloudy day, the low-level circuit is usually a better fit than committing to a high fell, but the rocky step still deserves care.

Why stopSt James' Church, built in 1840 on a rocky knoll, is worth a short detour.

St James' Church, built in 1840 on a rocky knoll, is worth a short detour. Its window dedicated to Alfred Wainwright faces Haystacks, the fell he considered his favourite. The wider valley is glacial country: Buttermere and Crummock Water were once one lake before deposits from streams gradually built the pastures between them.
