Overview

About Castlerigg Stone Circle

Why stop

  • A rare prehistoric circle in a sweeping fell setting

Heads up

  • Exposed to wind, rain, and muddy ground
  • Midday visits can feel busy
Castlerigg is a ring of 38 standing stones probably built around 4,500 years ago in the late Neolithic. The stones sit on open ground east of Keswick, and the setting is the reason this stop lands so well: the ring is backed by broad views toward Helvellyn, High Seat, and the surrounding fells. You can walk around the stones and take in the landscape at the same time, so it works as a short heritage stop rather than a hike.

Before you go

Best time to go

For the quietest experience and the best low-angle light, aim for a weekday morning or late evening. Summer weekends and holiday middays are more likely to feel busy. Winter brings shorter daylight and colder, wetter conditions, while clear mornings and evenings give the strongest chance of seeing the surrounding fells clearly.

The ground is uneven and can become slippery or muddy after rain. Bring shoes with dependable grip and a warm, waterproof layer. The circle is exposed to the fell weather, and a dramatic view can disappear into cloud quickly.

More about Castlerigg Stone Circle

Plan your visitAdmission is free, with access during daylight hours.

Admission is free, with access during daylight hours. For navigation, use Castle Lane, Keswick, CA12 4RN. Parking near the stones is limited, and walking from central Keswick takes about 30 minutes. Treat this as an outdoor stop rather than a serviced attraction: there are no toilets at the circle, so use facilities before leaving town.

Good to knowDogs on leads are welcome, but sheep graze the site.

Dogs on leads are welcome, but sheep graze the site. Keep dogs close and avoid disturbing the animals. The stones are a quick visit on their own, but allow extra time if you want to walk from Keswick or wait for a break in the cloud.

Why stopThe site is deliberately simple and open-air.

The site is deliberately simple and open-air. There is no visitor centre or café at the circle, but that simplicity lets the stones and the surrounding hills do the work. In clear weather, stand back from the ring to frame the stones against the hills; in mist or low cloud, the same view becomes quieter and more atmospheric.
