The Sembrich is a small opera museum and performance venue in Marcella Sembrich’s former teaching studio on Lake George in Bolton Landing. It combines a look at her career with a short walk through wooded lakeside grounds. Come for the history and quiet shoreline setting; the paths are short, so treat this as a cultural stop rather than a hike. The museum is seasonal, so check current opening details before you go, especially around performances.

Inside, exhibits cover opera and Sembrich’s life, with fine art, costumes and ephemera from the singer and her colleagues. Visitors often value the compact collection and knowledgeable staff. The intimate scale is part of the appeal: see the rooms, then leave time to get outside.

Sembrich bought a 55-acre Lake George estate and built her teaching studio there in 1922. Today, 4.5 acres remain, including the studio. Short walking paths and picnic areas sit among trees beside the water, making the grounds a peaceful second half of the visit. Bring a picnic if you want to eat here; The Sembrich encourages carry-in lunches, and food and drinks stay outside the museum.

There is a visitor parking lot on the property, with limited reserved accessible spaces. The museum and restrooms are wheelchair accessible, and some lakeside paths are low grade, though natural terrain may still be difficult for some walkers and wheelchairs. Dogs can join you on the grounds if cleaned up after, but not inside the museum or at events. Check the current schedule before you drive over; performances can affect museum access.

Marcella Sembrich (1858–1935) made her operatic debut in Athens in 1877 and went on to sing 466 performances with the Metropolitan Opera. After retiring from the operatic stage in 1909, she continued as a concert singer and taught young singers at Lake George. In 1924 she became director of the vocal programs at both Juilliard and the Curtis Institute, bringing students to Bolton Landing for summer study.

From private retreat to public museumThe studio was built in 1922 as part of Sembrich’s summer retreat.

The studio was built in 1922 as part of Sembrich’s summer retreat. The museum opened to the public in 1937, two years after her death, and the association that preserves her legacy followed in 1940. The visit connects a working teaching room to a longer story of opera performance and training in the Adirondacks.
