Las Vegas Bay Overlook

Las Vegas Bay Overlook is a short spur off Lakeshore Road to a developed picnic area above the Las Vegas Wash. It works best as a meal stop or a pause to look across the open desert basin and mountain ridge. The picnic area is above the Wash, not on the shoreline; changing reservoir levels affect how much water appears beyond it. Follow Las Vegas Bay Overlook Road about 0.2 mile to the picnic area. For a photo, keep the blue-roofed shelter low in the frame and include the basin and ridge behind it.

The site has 18 picnic tables, eight grills, restrooms, and drinking water. It is open year-round and does not take reservations. Park admission applies, so keep your pass or proof of admission in the vehicle. Desert heat can be dangerous; plan the stop with the weather in mind and bring what you want to cook.

The Wash channels rain and treated water from the Las Vegas Valley toward Lake Mead, and its channel supports wetland habitat in the Mojave Desert. Great blue herons use the corridor, though wildlife sightings are never guaranteed. From the overlook, look down into the canyon and follow the Wash toward the bay rather than expecting a lakeside visit.

The Wash carries water from urban runoff, groundwater, stormwater, and treatment releases. A restoration effort begun in 1998 built 21 weirs to help stabilize the channel and restore habitat. Some of the material came from demolished Las Vegas hotels and casinos, an unexpected trace of the city in the canyon below.

At the mouth of the Wash, Rafael Rivera scouted for a Spanish trading party that camped there in 1829–30 on a route that helped establish a shorter trail between Santa Fe and Los Angeles. Lake Mead later covered the historic campsite. The overlook ties a present-day water corridor to an older route through the same desert.
