Trail guide
Birch Path is the blue-waymarked 1 km (0.62 mi) loop at Cashel Forest, from the visitor centre through mixed native woodland to the wildlife pond and Donald Dewar cairn. Allow about 30 minutes. It suits a quick, easy walk with small bridges and places to pause rather than a hill climb.
From the visitor centre, pass the metal gate onto a wide forestry track. The path curves by gnarled old birches, crosses two small wooden bridges and skirts mossy, wet birch-and-alder woodland. A short side path leads left to the cairn among gorse; rejoin the blue route, then turn right at the signed junction. The loop descends past the pond’s small viewing platform and returns by the meadow and picnic barn. The platform can be slippery. Most of the surface is firm and even, but some track is bumpy and gradients reach 11%.
Use the visitor-centre car park; the gate is just beyond the centre. The forest and car park have daylight access year-round, but visitor-centre toilets are seasonal. Benches are spaced along the walk, and the picnic barn gives shelter by the meadow; no food outlet on the route was found. Adders may bask on grassy verges in spring and summer. Keep dogs on a lead through the first section and don’t let them into the pond.
