Trail guide
The Luss Heritage Path is an easy loop linking the model-village streets, a wooded quarry path, the River Path, the churchyard and Loch Lomond’s shore. The mapped circuit is about 2.8 km (1.7 miles), takes roughly one hour, and starts and finishes at the main village car park. It suits a short visit when you want more than the waterfront: village pavements give way to woodland, small bridges and a river walk before the lochside return. The route follows the Heritage Path circuit; the separate Luss Glebe loop is an optional detour and is not included here.
From the car park, head toward the primary school, then climb steps to the footbridge over the busy A82. Beyond the bridge, go through the gate onto the signed Quarry Walk. In the trees, smaller paths branch away, so keep to the main route. Steps descend to a wooden bridge beside spoil heaps from the old slate workings. Slate from the quarry helped roof Glasgow’s 19th-century tenements; the neat cottages back in Luss were built around 1850 as a model village for local workers.
After the bridge, the path follows the stream past a small weir and beneath the A82, then crosses grazing land and a small wooden bridge to a village road. Steps lead down again to the River Path. Follow Luss Water downstream past a sharp river bend and benches. The walk passes a water-treatment works before reaching the first houses. Stay straight toward the church rather than crossing to the optional Glebe path.
Luss Church dates from 1875, but its graveyard is much older; look for the 11th-century Viking hogback stone among the grave markers. A gate behind the church leads to the loch shore and Luss Pier. On a clear day, frame the pier or shoreline in the foreground with Ben Lomond across the water. From the pier, the main street passes the model-village cottages and returns to the car park.
Most of the circuit uses pavements or firm paths, but the Quarry Path has steps and short steeper sections. The A82 is crossed on a footbridge, and the route is not step-free. The Park Authority grades the village paths easy. Cafés and hotels are in the village after the walk rather than out on the trail. The main Luss car park beside the National Park information point is chargeable. Dogs may accompany walkers under Scotland’s access rules; keep them properly controlled, especially near grazing animals and other visitors.
