“Cashel Forest, close to this stretch of the east shore road, is a forest in the making. A remnant of old oakwood survived here, but by the late nineteenth century sheep farming had become the main use of the land.”

Cashel Campsite is a 168-pitch campground on Loch Lomond's east shore at Rowardennan, taking tents, caravans, motorhomes and campervans, with hardstanding electric pitches. The West Highland Way passes the entrance, so it's a useful base for walkers as well as campers who want to spend time by the water. The main reason to choose it is the setting: pitches look across to Inchlonaig, the surrounding hills and Queen Elizabeth Forest Park, with direct access to the loch for swimming, kayaking, paddleboarding or launching a boat when conditions suit.

What you getThis is an organised campsite rather than a basic wild-camping stop.

This is an organised campsite rather than a basic wild-camping stop. Toilets, showers, drinking water, dishwashing, laundry, chemical-waste disposal, a play area and accessible facilities are listed, along with a small shop for coffee, cold drinks, ice cream, quick meals, snacks and camping supplies. Dogs are welcome on leads. Choose it for facilities and loch time in the same stop, not for a quick roadside visit.

Making it workFrom Drymen, take the B837 towards Balmaha and Rowardennan.

From Drymen, take the B837 towards Balmaha and Rowardennan. The campsite is on the left three miles after Balmaha, one mile beyond Milarrochy Bay. The approach after Balmaha has a rough surface and a sharp, steep bend, so take it slowly. Some visitors have found parts of the site infrastructure tired. There is a small car park, and the site doesn't allow electric-car charging from pitch power poles. For a proper meal, plan on the Rowardennan Hotel or the Oak Tree Inn at Balmaha rather than relying on the campsite shop.
