The Lodge at Mammoth Cave

The Lodge at Mammoth Cave is a multi-building lodging campus on the park’s South Side, across a pedestrian bridge from the cave-tour Visitor Center. It’s the closest in-park overnight base for cave tours and nearby park walks. If you’re planning more than one tour, staying here makes the day easy; if you’re only coming for a tour, you can visit without booking a room. Reserve ahead and choose the building carefully, because “a room at the lodge” can mean several very different stays.

The campus has Sunset Terrace rooms, Historic Cottages, Woodland Cottages and newer Family Cabins. Family Cabins have multiple bedrooms and full kitchens; the simpler Historic Cottages don’t have TVs or Wi-Fi. Room layouts and amenities vary, so check the exact accommodation before booking. Guest reports on comfort and upkeep are mixed, which makes that distinction useful. Pet rules also vary by building: Woodland Cottages accept pets, and outdoor self-service kennels are available at the lodge.

The Green River Grill & Bar serves sit-down meals, while the Lantern Café has grab-and-go food and ice cream. Maple Springs Coffee & Gift Shop is another stop for coffee, and Caver’s Camp Store carries snacks and basic supplies. Parking is available by the lodge. Accessible rooms, wheelchair access and restrooms are listed, but the exact accessible room inventory is unclear, so confirm the building if a particular layout matters. There are no EV charging stations in the park.

The current main hotel was built in 1965 on the site of the first Mammoth Cave Hotel, an early-19th-century inn. It burned in 1916. A second hotel replaced it in 1925 and served visitors until 1979; a cedar grove marks that later site, with four trees surviving from that era. A restored stagecoach that once carried cave visitors now sits in the lobby. The Mammoth Cave Railroad later brought tourists from 1886 to 1936, and a remnant of its route and two railcars remain in the historic core.

The Woodland Cottages were completed in 1939 by Louisville firm Nevin, Morgan, and Kolbrook, with the Civilian Conservation Corps installing the surrounding landscaping and infrastructure. Another cottage group, the Deluxe Cottages, was completed in 1937. The different buildings make the campus feel like several generations of park travel gathered around the cave tours.
