Floyd Collins Homestead is the Collins family's home and show-cave site off Flint Ridge Road in eastern Mammoth Cave National Park. Great Crystal Cave drew visitors here, but the homestead is not an ordinary cave-tour stop: routine public access is not established. Check with the park before making it a destination, and respect any gates or closed areas.

Floyd Collins discovered the entrance to Great Crystal Cave in 1917. He and his family lived at the homestead and ran the cave as a show cave, but its location away from the main road made it hard to draw visitors. H. B. Thomas bought the property in 1927, renamed the cave Floyd Collins Crystal Cave, and operated it privately until the park acquired it in 1960.

More than twenty caves in the region competed for tourist traffic in the 1920s, and Great Crystal Cave's position away from the road left the Collins family at a disadvantage. Collins died in 1925 after becoming trapped at nearby Sand Cave on an exploratory trip for a cave closer to the road. He survived more than two weeks of rescue attempts; the story became national news and helped accelerate the effort to create a national park.

The homestead later served as the Cave Research Foundation's first headquarters. Explorers working from Flint Ridge connected its cave system to Mammoth Cave in 1972, when the mapped system measured 144.4 miles. The park later reported more than 400 miles of mapped passages.
