Mammoth Cave Picnic Area is the park’s largest picnic ground, reached by a side road north of the visitor-center parking lot. It has two sections with plenty of tables, charcoal grills, potable water, restrooms, and access to hiking trails. If you want a sit-down meal before or after a cave tour, this is an easy place to stop.
The tables are spread through the woods, with an open-sided pavilion for a covered break. Two shelters can be reserved. Bring your own meal; this is picnic space, and no food service is listed for the grounds.
From December 1 through March 1, the vehicle gate and restrooms are closed, but you can still walk in. The nearest tables are about 150 yards from the visitor-center lot when the gate is shut, and you’ll need to pack out your trash.
Two fireplaces in the first open-sided pavilion date to Civilian Conservation Corps work around 1940.
