Glacier Vista

Glacier Vista is a named overlook on a spur from the upper Skyline Trail at Paradise, facing Nisqually Glacier on Mount Rainier’s south side. It’s a worthwhile add-on if you’re already hiking Skyline; this isn’t a roadside pullout. The spur itself is listed at 0.2 mile and about eight minutes from its junction, well above Paradise.

Start behind the Henry M. Jackson Memorial Visitor Center and follow Skyline uphill to the Glacier Vista junction. The junction is 1.3 miles from Paradise, then the vista is another 0.2-mile spur. A simple out-and-back by the same route works out to roughly 3 miles. The climb is steep at first and eases after about 0.4 mile; the upper trail network branches, so pick up a map before setting out. The longer Skyline outing often described as a five-mile hike continues to Panorama Point.

From the overlook, look toward the glacier on Rainier’s south slope. Leave some of the dark, rocky foreground in a photo; it helps show the glacier’s scale. For the broadest overall glacier view, use the separate Nisqually Vista Trail; this spur is best as the closer look during a Skyline hike.

Nisqually is one of Rainier’s most visited and best-surveyed glaciers. Lt. August Kautz crossed it during an 1857 summit attempt, and Allen Mason made its first photograph in 1884. Tacoma City Light and the USGS began measuring its surface elevations in the 1930s to understand how glacier change could affect hydroelectric water supplies; regular surveys continue.

The glacier has advanced and retreated more than once, but its overall trend since the nineteenth century is retreat. Its terminus was about 0.2 mile farther up-valley in 1884 than Kautz described in 1857. By the 1950s it had retreated nearly 1.2 miles beyond a bend in the valley and could no longer be seen from the road.
