Alpine Lodge sits in the tiny village of St Arnaud (about 640 m elevation), the gateway to the Nelson Lakes. The big win is location: you can settle in, then stroll to Lake Rotoiti and the start of classic lakeside tracks without moving the car.

Why Stay Here

If you want one place to launch hikes and short strolls, this is it. Easy loops from Kerr Bay and West Bay are on the doorstep, Mt Robert tracks deliver bigger views, and serious trampers can push on to Robert Ridge and Angelus Hut or deeper on the Travers–Sabine. Prefer a softer day? Book the Lake Rotoiti water taxi one way to Lakehead or Coldwater Hut and wander back to Kerr Bay.

You’ve got options: self‑contained apartments, straightforward hotel rooms, and a backpacker wing. Upgraded rooms add touches like underfloor heating; the backpacker side keeps costs down with shared facilities. Nature and Wildlife

Beech forest rings the lake, and the famous honeydew on the trunks fuels busy birdlife—expect real birdsong around the lakeside tracks. Around the lodge itself, guests often notice tūī in the gardens and frogs calling after dark. In summer, sandflies can be lively near the water, so come prepared.

Free Wi‑Fi and self‑parking are included. The Department of Conservation visitor centre in St Arnaud is your go‑to for maps, current track alerts, and hut booking details. To protect the alpine lakes (including Rotomaninitua/Lake Angelus), make sure any gear is fully dry for 48 hours before entering the water, or use the park’s cleaning stations.

A few rooms show their age, and the backpacker wing is basic—fine value, but don’t expect frills. Also note the restaurant may close on winter Mondays and Tuesdays after 3 pm; plan dinner accordingly.

Best Time to Visit

December–March brings the most settled hiking weather. April–May trades warmth for crisp blue‑sky days and autumn color. Winter flips the script for Rainbow Ski Area; expect true alpine conditions up high. Weekends and summer holidays are busiest—book rooms and any hut stays early, and consider midweek for quieter tracks.
