Trail guide
Brunner Peninsula Nature Walk is an easy 3.7 km loop from western Kerr Bay around the peninsula to the West Bay shore, then back by an inland connector and the streets. Allow about one hour. It is a good way to leave the campsite area for a quieter stretch of native forest and lake edge without taking on a long tramp.
The path runs a few metres above the lake under beech trees. Most of it is gentle, but stones and roots break up the tread, so it is not a smooth promenade. Several short spurs make it easy to reach the water. From the West Bay side, look across Lake Rotoiti toward Mount Robert; foreground shoreline rocks give the view scale, and the mountain can reflect in the water when it is calm.
The walk crosses the Alpine Fault twice. Shallow depressions in the track mark its trace; this is a subtle line in the ground, not a dramatic open crack. Interpretation panels along the way explain the area's history and give you a reason to slow down through the forest.
At the West Bay-side junction, turn inland to the connector for Cotterell Place, then follow View Road back toward Kerr Bay. That return uses residential streets, so the full loop is not lakeside all the way. Continuing farther north along the shore makes a longer outing rather than the 3.7 km loop. No food or drinking-water stop was confirmed on the route; bring what you need.
Dogs are not allowed on these Kerr Bay walks. Freezing conditions can occur at any time of year, so carry warm waterproof layers. Sandflies are especially common in summer, and wasps are most prevalent from December through April.
