Best time to go

This is a seasonal site, operating broadly from early spring into early November. Spring through autumn suits it best, when the moorland walks, the coast and the railway villages are all comfortably reachable for full days out and evenings back at the pitch.

Getting there

From the A171, turn onto the B1416 signposted Ruswarp, then at the Maybeck sign turn sharply left through the gates; the entrance is on the right within half a mile. The approach requires care, so slow down and follow the signed route rather than trusting a shortcut. The postcode is YO22 5JE, and there is a train station at Ruswarp within five miles.

Set near Whitby at Sneaton, this is a touring site for caravans and motorhomes inside the national park, and its appeal is space and quiet rather than on-site bustle. Pitches are pleasantly spacious and open in places, with more secluded bays sheltered by trees, and the western side of the site looks out over spectacular moorland views. Visitors consistently describe it as peaceful, well spaced and attractively wooded, with friendly and helpful staff.

  • 90 touring pitches, of which 63 are hardstanding
  • No tent pitches: the layout is built around self-contained outfits
  • Maximum outfit length 11.6 m
  • A mix of open pitches and quieter, tree-sheltered corners

  • Falling Foss waterfall and the tea gardens sit about half a mile southwest, a short outing reached by footpath
  • A dog walk starts from the site, and several area walks are accessible directly from the gates
  • Good base for Whitby, Robin Hood's Bay and Scarborough
  • The North Yorkshire Moors Railway and the villages of Goathland and Grosmont are within reach, along with plenty of scenic driving on the moor roads
Facilities to plan aroundElectric hook-up, motorhome service point and drive-over waste disposal
  • Electric hook-up, motorhome service point and drive-over waste disposal
  • WiFi available, which some visitors have found useful where phone reception is patchy
  • BBQs allowed and good TV reception
  • There is no toilet or shower block, so come fully self-contained and arrive with your own facilities in working order
  • Stock up before arrival: there is a supermarket at Sleights about three miles away and larger supermarkets in Whitby
  • The site is open to non-members as well as club members
Honest drawbacksThe calm and the generous spacing are the reasons to book, and they come with trade-offs.

The calm and the generous spacing are the reasons to book, and they come with trade-offs. Tent campers cannot be accommodated, and the absence of a wash block rules the site out for anyone without on-board facilities. There is little in the way of organised on-site activity, so the experience depends on getting out to the moors and the coast. The final turn through the gates also asks for patience with a larger outfit.
