Trail guide
From the information board the waymarked route follows public footpaths and bridleways onto a former railway corridor, then continues through fields and woodland edges near Abbot's House. A small stream is crossed by a wooden footbridge before the path returns to the village, finishing with a short road section along The Common and The Green.
Surfaces are mixed grass, dirt, gravel and old railway trackbed, with gates and rural ground underfoot. It is not a fully surfaced or universally accessible route, and the brief stretch of village road is shared with traffic.
This is a community remembrance walk for 12 local men who died in the First World War. The wider project includes 12 oak trees along the way, 12 commemorative sculptures at the community hub, plus the information board, waymarks and leaflets. Reading the board before you set off makes far more sense of what you pass.
Dogs are welcome on the public route, but livestock is present, so keep them under close control and give way to other walkers. On moorland, dogs must stay on public rights of way, and a lead shorter than 2 metres is required from 1 March to 31 July to protect ground-nesting birds.
Use the National Park car park in Goathland (YO22 5LX) and walk a short distance through the village to the information board on The Green. No permit is needed. The village has public toilets and places to eat and drink, so it is easy to combine the loop with a longer stop.
