First Beach is a broad, sandy Pacific beach at La Push, on Quileute Nation land. A short walk from vehicle parking puts you on the sand, where you can walk, watch surf and look out to sea stacks. It is an easy coastal stop, but the shore is exposed: expect cold or windy weather, and treat a clear sunset as a bonus.

Follow the shorelineLarge driftwood lies along the high-tide line and can make a straight walk to the water awkward.

Large driftwood lies along the high-tide line and can make a straight walk to the water awkward. James Island rises near the Quillayute River mouth at the north end; farther south, offshore sea stacks punctuate the horizon. For a useful photo, include driftwood in the foreground and a sea stack beyond it to show the beach’s scale.

Some visitors know La Push from the Twilight books; this is also a real community beach, so follow tribal signs, respect residents’ privacy, ask before photographing or recording people and activities, leave driftwood, shells and other natural objects in place, and stay out of marked sacred or burial areas.
