The tide sets the timing for a long walk to a lighthouse.
Overview
Cape Beale Lighthouse Trail is a 14 km out-and-back from the Cape Beale–Keeha Trailhead to the lighthouse, about 7 km each way. It is a long, strenuous coastal walk on rough, often wet footing, with a tide-dependent finish; choose it for the lighthouse, the coast and the old telegraph route, not for a quick viewpoint. Allow about eight hours for the return, with slack for breaks and the tide.

Trail guide
From the trailhead, follow the forest path to the junction and take the right-hand branch west toward Topaltos Beach. The crescent of sand is a welcome open stretch in a route that is mostly under forest. Walk to the beach’s southwest end and look for the marked trail entrance at a tree with floats hanging from it; that is where the route continues toward Cape Beale.
Past the beach, the trail crosses swampy bog, then climbs a steep rocky hill among drier vegetation and small, dwarfed trees. The climb is not a long mountain ascent, but the footing makes the day feel strenuous: expect mud, exposed roots, log crossings and slippery sections. The route returns the same way, so save enough energy for the bog and hill on your way back.
The final approach crosses tidal sand flats. Continue across only when the tide is 1.8 m or lower, and plan the return crossing before you leave the beach; do not let the lighthouse visit consume your safe tide window. Cape Beale Headlands day users must register at the West Coast Trail Information Office at Pachena Bay, and a National Park Entry Pass is required. There is no reliable fresh water or outhouse on the trail, so bring what you need. Camping is not permitted at the lighthouse.
The lighthouse dates to 1874 and the trail has linked Bamfield to the headland for more than a century. The section beyond Topaltos follows part of the old telegraph route, also used by the West Coast Trail; remnants of the line can still be seen along the way. At the end, the red-roofed station buildings sit among evergreens above a rocky shore. Include some of that coast in a photograph so the lighthouse reads as a headland station, not just a cluster of buildings.
Follow South Bamfield Road to the Cape Beale–Keeha Trailhead. Marked parking is about 400 m along the road from the trailhead, so allow for that extra walk; it is not included in the 14 km trail distance. No route-specific dog rule was confirmed, so check with Parks Canada before bringing a pet.
