Plan your stop

Before you go

Best time to go

Aim for clear, settled weather and long daylight hours if the hills and reservoir routes are the point of the trip, since the surrounding paths are more rewarding and easier to judge in good visibility. This part of the Peak District is exposed and can feel cool or windy, so pack warm and windproof layers plus proper footwear even for a short stay, and allow for wet ground on grass pitches.

Pitches and facilities

  • Grass pitches, grass pitches with electric hook-up, and hardstanding pitches with electric hook-up, taking tents, caravans, motorhomes and trailer tents.
  • Parking space next to the pitch.
  • Flushing toilets, washbasins, heated showers and hot water, plus dedicated accessible facilities and a parent and baby room.
  • Dishwashing, washing machines, a drying room, drinking water, gas cylinders and ice-pack freezing.
  • A small shop stocking snacks, ice creams, soup and hot drinks. It is not a grocery and there is no food service on site.
  • Pets are welcome, by arrangement, though there is no allocated dog-walking area.

More about Crowden Camping and Caravanning Club Site

Why choose itThis is a practical camping base rather than a sight in itself.

This is a practical camping base rather than a sight in itself. It sits in the northern Peak District about six miles northeast of Glossop, with hills on several sides and the Woodhead and Torside reservoirs nearby. The site is fairly small and set up for people who want to walk or ride straight from their pitch.

Green, open and remote, with views out across the surrounding hills from parts of the site, though not every pitch looks the same way. Reviews consistently call it quiet and peaceful, but the Woodhead Road runs past nearby, so expect some traffic noise at times rather than complete silence.

The Pennine Way passes close by, which makes this a natural overnight stop for long-distance walkers. Backpackers arriving on foot and carrying their own equipment are welcomed for an overnight pitch. For easier, flatter miles, the Longdendale Trail follows the old Woodhead railway line and works well for both walking and cycling. Local footpaths start within reach of the site.

Practical preparationBring your main food shopping with you.

Bring your main food shopping with you. There is no convenience store close by, and the site shop covers snacks and hot drinks only. Mobile phone coverage is limited and there is no TV reception, so download maps and route notes before you arrive and tell people not to expect quick replies. Facilities are grouped close together, which keeps trips to the toilet and shower block short.

Honest drawbacksThe location is genuinely remote and a fair drive from the better-known Peak District…

The location is genuinely remote and a fair drive from the better-known Peak District attractions, so it suits walkers and cyclists more than visitors planning a tour by car. Road noise, patchy phone signal and the lack of nearby shops are the main trade-offs for the quiet, hill-edge setting.
