From the upper end of the car park, follow the weaving path up through the memorial wood. Go through the gate, turn left through the staggered barriers and continue on the traffic-free former railway line. The ramped platform opens over the valley, with ponds beside the path. Carry on beyond them until the trail begins to rise; that is the turnaround, and you return along the same corridor. This was part of the railway between Manchester and Sheffield and is now part of the Trans Pennine Trail.
