Haddon Hall and Its Terraced Gardens

Overview

About Haddon Hall

Why stop

  • Remarkably intact medieval and Tudor interiors
  • Terraced gardens with River Wye and Peak District views

Heads up

  • Many steps and uneven floors make the visit physically demanding
  • The car park is across the busy A6 from the hall
A private residence with around 900 years of history, held by one family throughout its existence, set in the valley of the River Wye just south of Bakewell. Because the family lived mainly at Belvoir Castle and the house stood empty for nearly 200 years, it escaped Georgian and Victorian remodelling. The result is an unusually intact medieval and Tudor interior that visitors often describe as walking through centuries of history rather than a restored showpiece.

  • The hall sits on the A6 between Bakewell and Rowsley, about 2 miles south of Bakewell, with bus connections reachable via Bakewell, Matlock, Derby, Sheffield and Chesterfield.
  • The dedicated car park is across the A6 from the hall and grounds. Reaching the entrance involves about 366 metres, some gravel, 30 steps, and crossing a busy main road.
  • Guided tours and parkland walks are separate offerings. Opening is seasonal, so check current visitor information before travelling.

The walled gardens are a rare 16th-century survival, arranged as terraces held by large buttresses that step down toward the River Wye, with views over ancient parkland and the surrounding national park. Expect herbaceous planting, lawns and walkways, topiary, a knot garden, roses, and plants tied to Elizabethan dyes, remedies and tinctures. Parts of the layout were redesigned by garden designer Arne Maynard.

The restaurant occupies the 17th-century stable block and serves fine dining, afternoon tea, light lunches and coffee-time treats. It is open to the general public as well as ticket holders, which makes it a possible stop even without a house visit.

  • Access inside is very challenging for anyone with restricted mobility, including wheelchair users. There are many uneven floors and steps without handrails.
  • The route from the car park adds steps, gravel and a busy road crossing before you even arrive.
  • Dogs are not allowed in the hall, gardens or grounds, apart from guide and support dogs. The footpath opposite the hall may be used with dogs.
  • Entry to the hall and gardens is ticketed, and parking is paid.
