Overview

About Bakewell Old House Museum

Why stop

  • Atmospheric Tudor fabric and everyday local history
  • Friendly volunteers add useful context

Heads up

  • Short steep walk from town
  • Compact visit rather than a full-day attraction
This is Bakewell's oldest standing home, built as a tithe house in 1534 for collecting the parish's dues. It survived as an Elizabethan gentleman's residence, then was carved up in 1777 into six cottages for workers at Richard Arkwright's mill, and was rescued by the local historical society in the 1950s. The draw is the building itself, with in-situ Tudor wattle and daub, a grand stone fireplace and early windows still in place.

Best time to visit

Opening follows a seasonal pattern, generally from late March to early November during daytime hours, so check before travelling out of season. As practical advice rather than measured fact, midweek or earlier in the day tends to feel calmer in the small rooms and gives more chance to talk with the volunteers.

Getting there on foot

The museum sits behind All Saints Church and is easy to walk past without noticing. From Rutland Square it is roughly 310 metres, but the route is a short, rather steep uphill climb up an old lane and across a cobbled forecourt. On-site parking is limited to Blue Badge holders or by prior arrangement, so plan on using the town car parks and walking up.

More about Bakewell Old House Museum

What you seeEleven small rooms trace the house through its changes, furnished and interpreted to show…

Eleven small rooms trace the house through its changes, furnished and interpreted to show ordinary domestic life rather than grand history. Displays include objects found inside the walls during restoration, along with ceramics, textiles, costumes, toys, cameras and other material donated locally over decades. Volunteers on duty tend to be friendly and well informed, and a short conversation usually adds more than the labels do.

How long, and who it suitsAllow about 1 to 1.5 hours.

Allow about 1 to 1.5 hours. This is a compact, niche local-history stop rather than a half-day attraction, best suited to anyone curious about Tudor building fabric and everyday Peak District life. Families often find enough hands-on interest to hold attention for an hour. As an editorial suggestion, it makes a sensible wet-weather option when the dales and moors look unappealing, and a good pairing with a wander round the town.

The courtyard and public toilet are wheelchair accessible, and a portable entrance ramp can be requested in advance. Some ground-floor rooms can be reached, but there are small steps, uneven historic floors and narrow spaces, and the upper floor is only reachable by a flight of stairs with no lift. The building cannot be described as fully accessible, so it is worth calling ahead to check what will work for you.
