About Millers Dale Goods Shed

Why stop

  • Hands-on railway history in an atmospheric former station
  • A natural heritage break on the Monsal Trail

Heads up

  • Entry depends on the adjacent cafe being open
  • Compact, self-guided visit with no staff on site
Once derelict and now fully restored, this stone and brick goods shed sits beside the former Millers Dale Station on the Monsal Trail. It is a compact, self-guided heritage stop that explains the railway, the industry and the wildlife of the surrounding dales, and it makes a natural pause point on a walk or bike ride along the old Midland Railway line.

The shed can be explored whenever the adjacent Refreshment Rooms cafe on the station platform is open, so check that the cafe is open before relying on getting inside. There is full, level access from the entrance by the Millers Dale car park and from the station platform via a small surfaced ramp, and the interpretation is designed for visitors of all ages and abilities. Site facilities are nearby rather than inside the shed: a paid car park, a step-free toilet, and the cafe with outdoor seating. The best approach is to combine it with a walk or ride on the Monsal Trail, using the shed as a sheltered halfway break.

The shed handled goods traffic on the working Midland Railway line, which last used it in the late 1960s. The station platform survives immediately alongside, and the trackbed itself is now the surfaced trail you arrive on, so the layout of the old station site is easy to read on the ground.

Honest limitationsThis is a single restored building, not a staffed museum or an operating station.

This is a single restored building, not a staffed museum or an operating station. Everything is self-guided, with no staff or rangers on site, and most visitors will see all of it in a short stop. If the cafe is closed, plan around the outdoor station site, the platform and the trail instead.
