Overview

About Monsal Head

Why stop

  • Dramatic viaduct-and-dale panorama
  • Memorable historic trail with tunnels and river views

Heads up

  • Steep descent from Monsal Head to the trail
  • Busy at popular summer times
This is a cliff-top viewpoint set high above Monsal Dale, and the reason to stop is immediate: you park at the top, walk a few steps to the edge, and the whole of the dale opens below you. The stone arches of Headstone Viaduct stride across the valley, the River Wye curls through riverside meadows, and the wooded slopes of Fin Cop and the rocky outcrops of Hobbs House frame the scene. The viewpoint itself is quick to take in if you are simply passing through, while the dale and its trail below turn it into a longer outing on foot.

Before you go

Best time to go

Early morning is the smart choice. Parking at the top is limited and chargeable, and it can be genuinely busy at the height of summer, so arriving early gets you both a space and a calmer view. A popular loop from Monsal Head down through Monsal Dale runs around 3.5 miles with roughly 700 feet of climbing, typically 1.5 to 2 hours, and most walkers rate it moderate rather than easy.

More about Monsal Head

The defining view is the viaduct set against a green limestone dale, best appreciated from the hilltop rather than from on the structure itself. The dale is carved into limestone that formed over 350 million years ago in a warm tropical sea near the equator, with shales appearing south of Monsal Head. Along the wider trail there is scope for spotting dippers and wagtails on the water, butterflies in summer and woodland flowers in season, though nothing is guaranteed.

How the viaduct and trail workThe viaduct carries the Monsal Trail, an 8.

The viaduct carries the Monsal Trail, an 8.5-mile traffic-free route along the former Manchester-to-London Midland Railway line, which closed in the late 1960s. Because it is an old railway bed, the trail surface is flat and easy underfoot for walkers, runners, cyclists, horse riders and wheelchair users, and it passes through six tunnels, with the longer ones around 400 metres and lit during daylight hours. Walking out across the viaduct and looking down at the river is the classic thing to do.

Monsal Head sits high above the trail, and the connection between the two is a steep walk down and back up. This link is explicitly not an accessible route. If you need flat, easy-access entry to the trail, use the station access points at Bakewell, Hassop, Great Longstone or Millers Dale instead, and treat Monsal Head purely as a viewpoint stop. Wear proper footwear: the steep sections can be slick when wet.

Monsal Head has a useful cluster of durable facilities for a rural viewpoint, including car parking, public toilets, a hotel and pub, cafes, a gift shop and guest houses, plus a picnic site. Specific opening arrangements and charges vary, so do not count on any one of them being available when you arrive. Dogs are welcome on the trail on leads.

Honest drawbacksThe view is the main event, and it is a short visit if you do not walk.

The view is the main event, and it is a short visit if you do not walk. The descent to the trail is steep in both directions, popular times bring crowds and parking pressure, and Monsal Head is a distinct spot from Monsal Dale below, so check which one your route notes actually mean before setting off.
