Heads up

  • The village is a short stop unless paired with a walk
Tideswell is a large, well-appointed village in the limestone uplands near Buxton, and the main reason to pull over is St John the Baptist church, known as the "Cathedral of the Peak". It was built entirely in the 14th century and holds notable monuments, brasses and woodcarvings. Visitors regularly describe it as calm and reflective. It is the focal point of the village, with a tower that stands out above the surrounding streets.

The streets around the church keep a good stock of fine old buildings, a legacy of a place that once lived on markets, quarrying, lead mining, and cotton and velvet mills. Today it works as a community village with traditional pubs, cafes and independent shops rather than a visitor complex. Take time to walk the lanes, look at the church and stop for a drink.

At the southern end of the village is Tideswell Dale, with a nature reserve, car park, toilets, picnic area and a sculpture trail. Options from there:

The geology here includes limestone altered to marble by heat from magma, and in June you may find bloody cranesbill and other wildflowers below Raven Tor.

  • 1 km upper loop from the Tideswell Dale car park, the easiest taster.
  • 3.2 km down the dale toward Miller's Dale, following the River Wye through a landscape shaped by former industry, including the mills the river once powered.
  • 1.6 km shorter version starting from Litton Mill.
Practical notes and the honest tradeoffWear proper walking shoes or boots; dale paths are rural and can be damp and uneven.

Wear proper walking shoes or boots; dale paths are rural and can be damp and uneven. Expect local traffic on village and dale approaches, and be ready to share the route with grazing livestock. Tideswell is a compact cultural and walking stop, not an all-day attraction, and it works best paired with a dale walk or slotted into a wider day out in the surrounding limestone countryside.
