Hidden Valley

Hidden Valley is a developed recreation area on Rocky Mountain's east side, best known for the park's only designated sledding hill. The slope is gentle and short, a good fit for younger kids or relaxed runs; if you're after speed or a long ride, it may feel tame. Bring your own sled or tube. There is no tow or rental, so every run comes with the walk back uphill. Stay inside the signed hill, ride feet-first, and leave metal runners at home.

A short nature walk follows the creek through the trees and over a small wooden bridge. The picnic shelter and tables make this a useful warm-weather stop too, even when nobody is sledding.

Skiers were riding up Trail Ridge Road in olive-green, canvas-covered Army trucks as early as the 1930s. The lift-served ski area opened in 1955 and eventually covered about 2,000 vertical feet, from roughly 11,400 to 9,400 feet. Downhill skiing ended in the early 1990s, and the lifts were removed; accounts differ on whether the final season was 1991 or 1992. The slopes now serve winter recreation without lifts.

Hidden Valley sits beside Trail Ridge Road (US 34), about seven miles in from the Beaver Meadows and Fall River entrances. There is parking, a flush restroom near the sled hill, and a picnic shelter with tables. There is no sled rental or listed food service, so bring what you need for a longer stop. Snow conditions change with snowfall, sun and wind.
