Guide
Riparian Overlook is a roadside pullout on the East District’s paved, one-way Cactus Forest Scenic Loop Drive, an eight-mile circuit. It looks out over a canyon wash and a broad stretch of saguaro forest. It works best as a short scenic break on the drive rather than a stop that needs a trail. Parking is limited and the pullout can fill, so be ready to continue to another stop.
The wash may be dry or hold pools after rainy periods; heavy summer storms can send fast water through the canyon. Interpretive panels add context about local wildlife. For a photo, keep the wash and nearby saguaros in the foreground with the cactus-covered ridge behind them; the whole landscape is the subject.
The Cactus Forest loop was built by the Civilian Conservation Corps between 1936 and 1939 as Skyline Loop Road. Stone retaining walls and masonry culverts remain part of the loop’s historic landscape, so the road itself carries some of the park’s story along with its views.
