Overview
Tucked off the Cactus Forest Loop Drive in the park’s Rincon Mountain District, Mica View Picnic Area is exactly what it sounds like: a quiet desert table with a sweeping backdrop of saguaros and the Rincons/Catalinas. It’s an easygoing spot to snack, linger in the shade of a ramada, and step right onto a mellow paved path through classic Sonoran Desert scenery.
What You’ll Find
- Picnic tables (including under a shelter) and charcoal grills for simple cookouts. Fires must stay in the provided grills and be fully extinguished afterward.
- Clean, waterless vault toilet and a decent-sized parking area that accommodates cars and even buses/RVs.
- No water here—plan to fill up before you come.
Trails From Here
This is the trailhead for the Mica View Trail, a short, flat, paved path toward the Broadway Trailhead with benches along the way and wide-open views of saguaro forest and surrounding mountains. For something a bit longer, connect a loop via the Shantz Trail and Cactus Forest Trail for an easy, scenic circuit of about 3.7 miles.
Note: The Mica View Trail surface has been undergoing repairs and is not ADA-accessible at this time—check current status before you go.
Wildlife and Scenery
Expect close-up cactus variety—towering saguaros, cholla, barrel and friends—plus constant mountain backdrops. Keep an eye out for lizards and rabbits; rattlesnakes are possible in warmer months. A crested (cristate) saguaro stands a short walk east of the picnic area, worth the detour for a quick look.
Getting There
From the one-way, 8‑mile Cactus Forest Loop Drive, a short unpaved spur leads to the picnic area. It’s generally passable in dry conditions—go slow, especially after rain. Vehicle access in this district is sunrise to sunset.
Best Time to Visit
Go early or near sunset for cooler temps and softer light—the desert glows and photos pop. Spring wildflower and cactus blooms shine after good rains. Midday brings harsh sun and heat, and shade is limited, so plan meals and walks around the day’s cooler edges.

- Pets are allowed here and on paved trails when leashed; hot pavement can burn paws.
- No cell service in spots; bring a paper map or download one.
- There’s an equestrian hitching post/corral in the area.
