Rincon Mountains Overlook is a roadside viewpoint on the Cactus Forest Scenic Loop Drive in Saguaro National Park’s Rincon Mountain District. It looks southeast across the cactus forest toward the Rincon Mountains, making it a quick stop for a broad landscape view rather than a walk to a destination. For a photo, leave some cactus-covered foreground below the ridgeline; it gives the range more scale than a frame of peaks and sky alone.
The Cactus Forest Scenic Loop is paved and 8 miles long, with several pullouts, vistas and trailheads. The park says it has no parking for RVs and other larger vehicles; vehicles wider than 102 inches or combinations 40 feet or longer are prohibited. Treat the overlook as one stop on the east-district drive.
The Rincons are a metamorphic core complex, a mountain block exposed as Arizona’s crust stretched 20 to 30 million years ago. Older volcanic rocks shifted 15 to 20 miles southwest while deeper granite rose to form the Rincon and Santa Catalina ranges. The cactus forest below spreads across a flat, gravelly bajada at the base of the mountains, part of the landscape’s latest erosional stage.
