Stay on trail and behind railings to protect petroglyphs; do not touch or climb on rocks. Watch for rattlesnakes in rock crevices, and mind the uneven stone steps—heat makes even this short climb feel tougher.
Overview
This is the park’s easiest window into ancient rock art. The short, easy out-and-back climbs a small knoll to a dense cluster of petroglyphs pecked into dark, varnished boulders. Expect a quick payoff: desert views up top and a surprising number of glyphs for such a tiny effort.
Route and Terrain
The walk is about 0.3 miles total, out-and-back, with roughly 26–36 feet of gain. It’s well-marked and includes stone steps and a few narrow bits—simple, but not wheelchair- or stroller-friendly. Plan on 20–30 minutes if you linger to study the panels.
What You’ll See
Over 200 prehistoric petroglyphs attributed to the Hohokam span spirals, geometric designs, and a few animal figures. Many are visible directly from the trail or fenced viewpoints—please enjoy them from a respectful distance. The boulder pile glows at day’s end, and the summit offers broad views across the desert.
Getting There and Facilities
Trail access is in the Tucson Mountain District (west) at Signal Hill Picnic Area off the graded-dirt Bajada Loop Drive (via Golden Gate Road to Signal Hill Road). You’ll find a large parking lot, picnic tables, and outhouses at the trailhead.
Best Time to Hike
Go early or late for cooler temps and softer light—sunset is especially good for viewing and photos. Weekends can draw crowds; midweek tends to be quieter. Conditions and hours can change, so it’s smart to check current status before you head out.
Respect and Safety
Stay on the designated path and behind railings; never touch, climb, or mark the petroglyph rocks. Rattlesnakes favor the shaded crevices around the boulders—watch your footing and keep kids close. Because some glyphs sit high on the rock faces, a small pair of binoculars or a camera with zoom helps you see details without leaving the trail.
