Overview

About Valley View Overlook Nature Trail

Why go

  • A short, easy route with benches and broad Avra Valley views
  • Plant signs add interest before the overlook

Heads up

  • Limited parking at the trailhead
Valley View Overlook Nature Trail is an easy 0.8-mile out-and-back in the Tucson Mountain District. It drops into and out of a couple of washes, then climbs gradually through Sonoran Desert vegetation to a ridge with benches and a wide view across Avra Valley. If you want a short walk with a real destination, this is a strong pick: there is enough change in the path to feel like a hike, but no long climb to budget for. Allow about 30 to 45 minutes with time at the overlook. The 0.8 miles is the whole walk there and back; the mapped corridor is about 0.4 mile one way, then you return along it.

Hiking Valley View Overlook Nature Trail

Cross the washesThe tread is dirt rather than pavement.

The tread is dirt rather than pavement. It dips into a couple of washes and climbs back out before the final gradual rise. Expect a few rough, uneven sections through the wash bottoms and some stone steps; they make the walking feel less polished than the trail’s easy rating suggests. This is still a short, easy outing for most walkers, but it is not a smooth roll or stroll. Follow Valley View to the ridge and turn around there for the route described here.

Read the desert signsSigns along the way identify several common Sonoran Desert plants.

Signs along the way identify several common Sonoran Desert plants. Saguaros and other cactus give the walk its desert character, and the plant labels make a good reason to slow down instead of heading straight for the benches. This is not a formal garden; it is a short trail through the native vegetation. If you are curious about the plants, take your time between the trailhead and the ridge: this section gives the outing more to notice than the final view alone.

Take in the valley from the ridgeThe ridge has benches and wide views over Avra Valley.

The ridge has benches and wide views over Avra Valley. Look for Signal Hill, which appears as a small dark mound, and the jagged ridge of Picacho Peak to the north. Two benches face different directions: one looks back toward the trailhead and the saguaro-covered low country; the other opens toward Avra Valley. For a photo, frame one of the nearby saguaros against the open plain and the distant ridge. That gives the broad desert view a bit of foreground and makes the valley’s scale easier to read.

A trail built by the CCCThe Civilian Conservation Corps built the trail in the 1930s.

The Civilian Conservation Corps built the trail in the 1930s. That gives this easy viewpoint walk a bit of early park history, alongside the plant-interpretation signs and the views from the ridge. It is a satisfying short outing when you want to get out among the Sonoran Desert plants without committing to a long climb.

Keep the distance clearThis entry covers only the Valley View trailhead-to-overlook walk and its return.

This entry covers only the Valley View trailhead-to-overlook walk and its return. The park map also shows Wild Dog as a continuation from this area toward the Golden Gate Road and Signal Hill side. Taking that trail changes the outing and is not part of this 0.8-mile figure; check the signs and choose it deliberately if you want a longer walk.

Start at Valley ViewUse Valley View Trailhead on Hohokam Road.

Use Valley View Trailhead on Hohokam Road. The parking area is small and has limited spaces, so an early arrival can make finding a spot easier. Pets are not allowed on this route; service animals are permitted. The walk is short, but it is in open desert, so the heat can still matter on a warm day. Plan a cooler time if that affects your comfort.
