Route and Access
Most hikers start from the small parking area along Hohokam Road and briefly follow the Valley View Trail to reach Wild Dog. The trail runs to Golden Gate Road near the turnoff for Signal Hill Picnic Area; if someone in your group can shuttle, you can make it a point-to-point. Walking the road to or from Signal Hill adds about 0.5 miles. Alternatively, park at Signal Hill and walk the dirt road to the junction if parking on Hohokam is tight.
What You’ll See
This is bajada terrain—broad, gently rolling desert at the base of the mountains—studded with giant saguaros and seasonal cactus blooms (cholla and hedgehog). Views open up nicely for such a short hike, with especially nice light near sunset. Wildlife sightings are common: rabbits and ground squirrels are regulars, and javelina are possible.
Is It Worth It?
Yes, if you want an easy, low-commitment desert ramble that feels quiet once you’re past the Valley View connector. It’s not a big-vista summit—just a pleasant, photogenic wander. If you want a stiffer workout and sweeping panoramas, consider heading for the Hugh Norris Trail to Wasson Peak instead. A popular upgrade here is pairing Valley View + Wild Dog together for roughly 2.6 miles total—minimal extra effort, more payoff.
Best Times to Hike
October through May is prime. Summer heat can be brutal; start at sunrise or go late-day for cooler temps and the best light on the saguaros. Weekdays and early/late windows see the lightest traffic. The trail is straightforward with average signage, but bring a map/app download if you tend to wander.
Logistics and Tips
Parking is limited along Hohokam Road; there’s an entry fee for the park. Signal Hill Picnic Area typically has restrooms. Carry plenty of water—fill up at the Red Hills Visitor Center (even after hours)—and bring sun protection. Footing is mostly firm sand with some loose rock; sturdy shoes help. Pets aren’t allowed on trails here.
