Trail guide
Wildhorse Trail is a 4.4-mile out-and-back from the East Speedway access to Little Wildhorse Tank in Saguaro’s Rincon foothills. Allow about 2 to 2¼ hours. It is a steady desert climb to a rocky watercourse, with Catalina Mountain and Tucson Valley views; the tank is a bonus, not a dependable water stop.
The first 1.2 miles rise steadily through saguaro forest. The natural tread is sandy and can be eroded, with uneven rocks and occasional horse use; give stock room to pass. As the trail gains the foothills, the views open toward the Santa Catalina Mountains and across the Tucson Valley.
The upper approach has mild switchbacks, rock steps and exposed granite, then reaches a drainage that may carry shallow water after rain. Little Wildhorse Tank is a rocky outcrop with potholes; rain or snowmelt can bring pools and a small waterfall, while dry spells can leave the basin empty. Frame the pale bedrock and water, when present, against the saguaro-covered slope. Return by the same corridor. A separate 6.4-mile circuit from Douglas Spring reaches the same tank by the Garwood and Carrillo trails, but starts and ends at a different access.
Park along East Speedway Boulevard just west of the Douglas Spring parking lot, near the horse-trailer sign and metal gate. The Wildhorse start is a separate roadside access, with no restrooms or services. The route has little shade: carry water and sun protection, and expect rough footing. Dogs are not allowed on park trails.
