Squatters Cabin

Squatters Cabin is a one-room log homestead at the north end of Huckleberry Meadow, in a grove of giant sequoias. It is an unassuming stop, but I would add it if you are already exploring the Crescent Meadow area and want a tangible piece of the park’s early settlement history.

Start from the Crescent Meadow parking area. Take the path along the meadow’s west side north to the first junction and turn left toward Huckleberry Meadow. At the next junction, continue straight; the cabin sits just above the meadow on your left. Crescent Meadow has vault restrooms but no water, so fill up before setting out.

The cabin is tied to the Kaweah Colony, a socialist cooperative community in the Sierra in the 1880s. The group’s history is closely connected to the founding of Sequoia National Park. The structure is small, about 14 by 16 feet, with a single room and peeled horizontal logs made mostly of white fir.

Step back enough to include some of the giant trees around the cabin. The sequoias give the modest log building a sense of scale that a close-up of the walls misses.
