Hiking Eagle View Trail

A short climb to a big viewEagle View is a 1.

Eagle View is a 1.5-mile out-and-back from the Crescent Meadow parking area, following the first three-quarters of a mile of the High Sierra Trail to a rocky overlook. The National Park Service estimates about 280 feet of climbing and one to two hours for the outing. It is a good pick if you want a real walk and a broad Sierra panorama without taking on the High Sierra Trail’s long wilderness continuation. Reach Eagle View, take a pause, then return the same way.

The route starts at the edge of Crescent Meadow and climbs through shady forest of red and white fir, sugar pine, and occasional giant sequoias. Near Eagle View it emerges onto a warm, south-facing slope. The short distance keeps the commitment modest, but the climb is steady and the tread is uneven, rocky dirt rather than a level path.

At the rocky overlook, look back west toward Moro Rock, down to the Middle Fork Kaweah River, and ahead to the glaciated peaks of the Great Western Divide. That sweep of wilderness and high Sierra is the reason to come. Marmots, mule deer, and birds may be seen along this part of the trail, though sightings are never guaranteed.
