George & Louise Lawr Farm is an 1890s farmstead in the Port Oneida farming landscape of Sleeping Bear Dunes. It’s a history-first stop, not a scheduled house tour: current public-entry details, hours, and interior access aren’t established, so don’t count on going inside.

A farm built on 120 acresThe land first belonged to Thomas Kelderhouse.

The land first belonged to Thomas Kelderhouse. In 1889 his son deeded 40 acres to George and Louise Burfiend Lawr; they bought the adjoining 80 acres and built their farm in the 1890s. They farmed here until 1945.

Winter work, and a warm welcomeGeorge was a skilled carpenter.

George was a skilled carpenter. In winter, he and his brother Howard teamed horses to haul logs toward Cedar or Maple City, rotating two sleighs so one could be loaded while the other was away. Louise was remembered for offering large cream cookies with raisins to people who came to her door.

Keeping ice through summerPort Oneida families cut ice from frozen lakes for their homes.

Port Oneida families cut ice from frozen lakes for their homes. Shell Lake was a main source, and Mud Lake was near the Lawr farm. Neighbors hauled the blocks to icehouses and packed them in sawdust, working together with heavy hand saws before powered saws took over.
