“North Unity School is ahead beside the Heritage Trail, near Narada Lake. I'd combine a look at this small log schoolhouse with a walk, rather than come just for the building.”

North Unity School is a restored one-room log schoolhouse along the Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail near Narada Lake. It’s a modest historic stop; I’d pair it with a walk on this stretch instead of making a special trip just for the exterior. The school has interpretive information, but public hours and interior access details weren’t found, so plan on an outside visit.

Horizontal logs fit closely together, with saw-cut dovetail joints locking each corner. The school was built around 1856. A restoration from 2020 to 2022 repaired six windows and sills, replaced a hewn log, and renewed the material between the logs.

North Unity began in 1855 as a community of Czech and German immigrants who arrived by sailboat at Good Harbor and traveled inland. It had a school, sawmill, and store; this schoolhouse is among the few physical reminders left. The one-room school taught grades 1 through 8 and served as many as 60 children at a time.

Nearby, the Heritage Trail crosses wet ground at Narada Lake on a wooden bridge before reaching views from the lake’s boardwalk. Look for old stumps and beaver-cut logs along the shore; the boardwalk adds a separate lake view to the stop.
