George Johan Hutzler Farm is a 19th-century homestead on South Manitou Island, built by George Johann Hutzler and his family after he settled there in 1856. I'd include it if you want to understand the island beyond its shoreline: the farmhouse and barn give its early farming years a tangible shape. No farm-specific tour or interior access is documented, so don't plan on going inside.
The surviving two-story barn was built around 1870–1880 as a swine barn. Hay filled its upper story, insulating the half-story pig pens below. By 1868, the family had two barns and 15 cultivated acres; the surviving barn is the oldest remaining part of the island's farm community.
Hutzler planted apple and cherry trees and grew carnations near the house. After his death, his son John carried on the farm and became a sought-after fiddler at island barn dances. The farm's story is a useful reminder that South Manitou was once a working community, not just a place to visit for its landscape.
This is part of a South Manitou Island visit, not a roadside stop. Farm-specific public facilities and a regular visitor route aren't documented; check current island access before making the farm a focus of your trip.
