More about South Manitou Boat House and Contact Station

A small building with a serious jobSouth Manitou Boat House and Contact Station is a small historic U.S.

South Manitou Boat House and Contact Station is a small historic U.S. Life-Saving Service boathouse beside the island's historic village dock. Built in 1901, it served the surfmen who answered wrecks in the Manitou Passage. It's a niche stop for maritime history, best seen as part of a longer island visit rather than a quick roadside detour.

The boathouse's ramp ran to a slip at the harbor edge, where surfmen could send a surfboat out by rowing or sailing. A carriage and metal rails did the heavy work of getting the boat down to the water. Look from the approach toward the harbor to see how closely the building, ramp and launch point fit together. For a photo, include the ramp leading from the building; it explains more than a straight-on shot of the facade.

The Manitou Passage carried Great Lakes shipping, but shoals, fog and storms put ships in danger. In 1911 the station's crew rescued all 13 people from the steamer Three Brothers after it ran aground; they sheltered at the station for 13 days. The larger former life-saving station next door is a separate building now used as a private ranger residence and office, not part of the public boathouse visit.
