August Beck Farm

August Beck Farm is a historic South Manitou Island farmstead on the central farm loop, and the first of its two surviving farmsteads. It suits a day when you want the island’s agricultural story and have time for a longer inland walk. The outing from the village and back is about 6 miles, including a farm loop of nearly 2 miles. Keep a generous buffer to return to the village dock.

After the route leaves Ohio Road, take the right fork about a quarter mile later; the Beck farm comes before the George Conrad Hutzler homestead. The barn built here in the early 1880s is gone, but its low foundation remains: white-cedar cordwood set in mortar, a method also called stovewood construction. The stacked wood ends make a distinctive trace of the farm’s working past.

The Becks arrived from Germany in the 1860s. August became one of the island’s progressive farmers, introducing pedigreed breeding stock to improve pig production and becoming the first on the island to acquire a grain cutter and binder. From about 1910 to 1940, island farms shared a threshing machine that moved from farm to farm. Eight people ran it; in a day it could thresh up to 75 bushels of rye or 150 bushels of oats. Harvest work also brought farm families together for a shared meal.
