South Manitou School House Trail is a 3-mile out-and-back from the island village to the one-room schoolhouse built in 1899. Most of the route follows unpaved island roads, with a short path to the building. Allow about 1½ to 2 hours for the walk and a look around. The destination is the draw: this is a straightforward history walk, not a summit or overlook hike.

Start near the ranger station by the dock. Take the road behind the boathouse to Burdick Road and follow it about a mile to Ohio Road. Turn north, passing the Florence Lake area, then continue to the schoolhouse. The route returns by the same corridor. The cemetery lies farther north and is a separate continuation, outside this trail’s distance.

Built in 1899, the school served students in grades 1–8; anyone continuing to high school had to leave for the mainland. Teachers also acted as principal, nurse and custodian, beginning the day by cleaning and lighting the stove. The building doubled as an island gathering place for spelling bees, recitals, skits and plays.
