Empire Bluff Trail

Overview

If you want maximum payoff for minimal effort, this is your move. Empire Bluff is a 1.5-mile round-trip, out-and-back to a bluff-top boardwalk and deck with sweeping views over Lake Michigan, the Sleeping Bear Dunes bluffs, South Bar Lake, and the village of Empire. It’s short, moderately hilly, and wildly popular—because the panorama is exactly the postcard image you came for. What you’ll see and the feel underfoot

The hike begins in mature beech–maple forest, peaceful and shaded, with spring wildflowers lining the path. About 0.1 miles in, keep an eye out for old farm implements—rusted reminders of the area’s agricultural past. Around 0.6 miles, a bench offers a quick breather and a preview overlook. Beyond, the trail works up gentle hills with built stairs before reaching the bluff-top boardwalk and observation platform, where the vista opens wide to Lake Michigan, the double‑dune landscape, South Bar Lake, and Empire. Logistics

Trailhead parking is on Wilco Road, about 1.7 miles south of Empire via M‑22. There’s a vault toilet at the lot, but note the approach includes a steep (about 12%) slope and a small curb barrier.
