Achenbach Trail

Achenbach Trail is the long 18-mile backcountry loop from the Juniper Campground access. Follow South Achenbach west through the Little Missouri valley to Oxbow Overlook, then return east on North Achenbach and a short connection along Scenic Loop Drive and Juniper Road. The mapped circuit is 17.91 miles; the visitor distance is the whole loop, not an out-and-back on one trail. Allow 10–12 hours. This is a whole-day wilderness hike, not a quick stop. If you only want the overlook, the separate short walk from Oxbow toward Sperati Point is a much easier choice.

The route has steep climbs and descents across open prairie, river bottom and broken badlands slopes. The long distance and repeated climbs make this a strenuous day. The commitment is real, and there’s no quick shortcut once you’re deep in the river valley. Start early enough to finish in daylight and leave room for breaks, wrong turns and the crossings.

South Achenbach crosses the Little Missouri twice. Both crossings are mapped as fords, and their depth and footing can change; check with the North Unit Visitor Center before setting out. There are no approved drinking-water sources in the backcountry, so carry all the water you’ll need. If you plan to stay overnight, get the free backcountry permit at the North Unit Visitor Center. There are no established campsites in the backcountry.

Tall grass and sagebrush can hide the trail markers, and game trails may look more inviting than the actual tread. Route-finding is part of this hike, not a minor inconvenience. Download the route before you leave service and check it often, especially around the river and on the climbs back to the plateau. If wet weather has softened the bentonite clay, expect slick footing on the slopes.

The South Achenbach stretch runs through cottonwood-lined river bottom, then climbs onto dry benches and high ground with broad views over the Little Missouri and the layered badlands. The river-and-buttes view is the standout photo stop; include some foreground for scale. Near Oxbow, the North Achenbach return climbs back through steep, open country and rolling valleys toward the scenic drive. The route’s appeal is the changing view from the river itself to the high, broken edge of the plateau.

The North Unit’s badlands are a stack of sandstone, dark lignite coal and blue-gray bentonite clay. Those different layers make the slopes look striped from across the valley. The clay is especially slippery when wet, so a dry-looking trail can become a much slower walk after rain.

Bison have been reported on the high ground along the route, with pronghorn and elk also living in the park’s prairie. Sightings aren’t guaranteed; give wildlife plenty of room and don’t approach. These are the badlands where Theodore Roosevelt spent time as a young man, landscape that later helped shape his conservation outlook.

Start at the Achenbach access where Juniper Road meets the trail by Juniper Campground. The loop returns to that access on Juniper Road after a short stretch of Scenic Loop Drive. No separate Achenbach parking-lot capacity or trailhead facilities were verified. Pets are prohibited on park trails and in the backcountry.
