Trail guide
Sperati Point is an out-and-back from Oxbow Overlook along the South Achenbach Trail. The mapped path is about 2.05 miles round trip and usually takes about an hour. Expect open, gently rolling prairie and a grassy rise at the end, where the Little Missouri bends through a broad stretch of badlands. The park rates the walk moderate to strenuous, so it asks more than the mileage alone suggests.
Published distances disagree. The NPS hiking list gives 1.5 miles without saying whether that is one way or round trip; other listings call it 2.4 miles round trip. The mapped trail segment measures about 1.02 miles each way, so this entry counts the full return walk as 2.05 miles.
The route crosses open grassland with little shade. Its worn path is generally easy to follow, though markers are sparse. Keep to the established tread and turn around at Sperati Point; animal tracks beyond the point are not part of this mapped hike. Bring water for the walk, and plan for sun exposure.
Bison use the park’s backcountry trails and may stand in the way. Give them room, never approach or pass between them, and wait or turn back if one blocks the path.
The destination is a small, open grassy point rather than a built summit. From here, the Little Missouri makes a broad bend below the floodplain and layered badlands. It’s a closer, more dramatic angle on the river than the view from Oxbow Overlook. For a photo, include some of the prairie or rocks in front of the bend to show how the point sits above the valley.
NPS calls attention to the variety of grasses and forbs along the walk; there are no trail-specific plant or wildlife sightings to count on. At Oxbow, the Little Missouri turns sharply east. The park’s story of that bend reaches back to the last ice age: continental glaciers blocked the river’s older northward route toward Hudson Bay, leaving it to cut its way east through the badlands.
