Fire Canyon / Silica Dome Overlook

Fire Canyon / Silica Dome Overlook is the road-end viewpoint for a pale sandstone dome set against the park's red and pink rocks. You can see the dome from near the parking area, so this is an easy stop even if you don't take the climb. I'd keep it if you want a broad canyon view with very little walking.

The dome's pale color comes from silica-rich sandstone; the red Aztec sandstone around it formed from ancient windblown dunes roughly 150 million years ago. Look for the iron-stained bands in the lighter rock. For photos, frame the white dome together with the red ridges; a close crop loses the contrast that makes this view stand out.

The optional Silica Dome hike is about 1.2 miles round trip. It circles behind the dome before the track fades into a steep, exposed climb to the top. From there, the view opens 360 degrees across Fire Canyon and the desert. There's a sheer drop at the summit, so skip the climb if exposed edges bother you. The overlook is worth stopping at without it.

This was a filming location for Star Trek: Generations (1994). The pale dome and red rock make the connection easy to picture if you know the movie.

Take Fire Canyon Road, a short spur from White Domes Road, to the end-of-road parking area. There's a restroom at the overlook. Heat changes the hike: the park warns that even short hikes can be dangerous in high temperatures, so carry water if you climb.
